Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)

Course Purpose:
The primary purpose of the American Red Cross Emergency Medical Response course is to provide the participant with the knowledge and skills necessary to work as an emergency medical responder (EMR) to help sustain life, reduce pain and minimize the consequences of injury or sudden illness until more advanced medical personnel take over. 

The care steps with in the course are consistent with the following:
  • 2015 International Consensus on CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC) Science with Treatment Recommendations
  • 2015 American Heart Association Guidelines Updated for CPR and ECC
  • 2015 American Heart Association and American Red Cross Guidelines updated for First Aid
This course meets or exceeds National Emergency Medical Services Education Standards Emergency Medical Responder Instrctional Guidelines.

Program Prerequisites:
There are no prerequistes for this program. 

 Training includes but is not limited to:
  • Unit 1: Preparatory; bloodborne pathogens, disease transmission, legal and ethical issues, the human body, lifting and movign patients.
  • Unit 2: Assessment; Primary assessment taking histories and vitals
  • Unit 3: Airway; airway and ventilation, airway management, oxygen
  • Unit 4: Circulation; The circulatory system, cardiac emergencies, CPR and AED's
  • Unit 5: Medical Emergencies:  Medical emergencies, poisoning, substance abuse environmental emergencies, behavioral emergencies. 
  • Unit 6: Trauma Emergencies; Shock, bleeding and Trauma, soft tissue injuries, chest, abdomen and genitalia injuries, head and neck injuries. 
  • Unit 7: Special Populations:  Childbirth, Pedatrics, older adults, patients with special needs. 
  • Unit 8: EMS Operations:  EMS Support and Operations, Access and extrication, Hazardous materials, incident command, response to disaster and terrorism.

Class Time and Cost:


April 2021 class:
Classroom (Can be done via ZOOM!!):
Monday/Wednesday 9am - -2pm April 12th - May 5th

Lab (Must be live in Kona): 
Saturday, Sunday and Monday May 8th, 9th and 10th 8am - 4pm

Class is a total of 60 hours of lecture and skills. 

Cost $1170 (plus tax) per person and includes all class supplies and student textbook.

A $350 non-refundable deposit is due at sign up.
