Bruce Haselrig

Origins and Foundation

Born, adopted, and raised in Western Pennsylvania, Bruce Haselrig Jr. grew up in a family where excellence wasn't just encouraged — it was expected. Surrounded by relatives who excelled across a wide range of professions, Bruce was driven early on to push himself to the highest levels of achievement.

Fire Service Career

After relocating to Cincinnati, Ohio, and working as a retail manager, Bruce felt a deeper calling — a desire to serve others in a meaningful way. That calling led him to the West Chester Fire Department, where he proudly served as a professional firefighter for 15 years. As a member of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), Bruce earned credentials as a Paramedic, Inspector, and CLC, answering countless calls and walking into danger so others could walk out safely.

Critical Care Paramedic

Throughout his fire service career and beyond, Bruce built an extraordinary 25-year career as a Critical Care Paramedic, developing an elite level of clinical knowledge and field experience that few possess. After sustaining a career-ending injury in the line of duty, Bruce relocated to Hawai'i to care for family members — and in doing so, rediscovered his greatest passion: teaching.

EMS Instructor

Today, Bruce channels decades of frontline emergency experience into his role as an EMS Instructor, training the next generation of first responders and healthcare providers. His areas of instruction include: ◆ Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) ◆ Basic Life Support (BLS) ◆ Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) ◆ First Aid and CPR ◆ Additional Medical Education Programs

Beyond the Classroom

When he's not in the classroom, Bruce puts his pitmaster skills to work running Rig's Island BBQ popups locally in Kailua-Kona. Combining his firefighter grit with island-inspired flavors, Bruce brings the same passion and dedication to the smoker that he brings to everything else in life.

Cassidy Stillwell

CPR, Lifeguard, Medical Assistant, and Swim Instructor, with 14 years of experience, specializing in wilderness and aquatic safety.

Cassidy began his career in safety here in Kailua-Kona. In 2012 at 18 years old he began working at an ocean adventure summer camp based out of Captain Cook as a water safety staff member, keeping students safe during dive, snorkel, and surf excursions.

At the age of 20 he moved to Austin, Tx and went into public service, working first as a Lifeguard then later as a Lifeguard Instructor and facility supervisor at Barton Springs Pool. Later he went on to become a Park Ranger and Forestry Specialist before leaving the big city behind to spend two months hiking on the Pacific Crest Trail, crossing the entire cascade mountain range on foot before moving back to the Big Island in 2024.

Cassidy also loves volunteering and giving back to his community. He served a 6-month term of service in the Texas Conservation Corps, where he built hiking trails, did wildfire mitigation, and completed invasive species removal and habitat restoration projects. He also served for three years in the Texas State Guard in a medical response unit, specializing in disaster response and mass evacuation. He went on multiple deployments to severe weather events to support his community during times of need. He now looks forward to serving the community here on Big Island as a member of the Community Emergency Response Team.

When he’s not training student in rescue skills, Cassidy spends his time with his daughters, out on a hiking trail, or playing in the waves at Magic Sands.
